War Resisters League is looking for a New York City-based part-time intern for a twelve-week period, June 13 – August 31. The intern will work 20 hours a week on a number of organizing projects and administrative tasks, including the following:
- Working with local WRL chapters and affiliate groups all over the country, contacting them about their organizing, and assisting WRL national organizers with creating media about WRL organizing, including blog postings, emails, a print newsletter, and video.
- Working with the WRL National Organizing Coordinator to do research within the WRL archives and other peace movement archival sources about the life and legacy of former staff organizer Bayard Rustin, who left the WRL staff for several months to work as the coordinator for the 1963 March on Washington. Our intern will also assist in working with local community groups to organize commemorative events in 2012, the centennial year of Rustin’s birth.
- Helping to organize a round-table discussion and interview series in New York City with various economic justice organizations and community groups fighting federal and state-level budget cuts about their thoughts on the military budget and how they might support cutting the military budget to fund human and community needs. This is a part of the long-term, campaign-based organizing of the national New Priorities Network.
- Updating the WRL website with current organizing resources and contact information for anti-war organizers across the country and working with the national WRL organizing staff to create a template for a coherent media and messaging strategy; this includes working on our blog and social media sites.
- Administrative and routine office tasks.
The intern will work primarily with our Organizing Coordinator and Field Organizer. The Freeman Internship is an opportunity for young people to become involved with a variety of tasks key to the work of a national antiwar organization and to develop their leadership. Applicants with experience in organizing, popular education/training, and campaign work are especially encouraged to apply. Web and design skills are a plus. There is a $200/week stipend provided and WRL will work with those who can receive college credit. WRL may be able to assist interns coming from outside of NYC with finding housing. There is an office cat.
The deadline for applications is Monday, May 2, 2011.
