Registration deadline extended to 31 May 2014!
Seven months after the passing of South African independence leader Nelson Mandela, War Resisters International will be hosting a momentous conference in Cape Town, South Africa: "Small Actions - Big Movements: the Continuum of Nonviolence."
Rooted in the historic struggle against apartheid in South Africa, this conference will bring together a gathering of activists from across the African continent as well as other places internationally--and you are invited!
Registration deadline extended to 31 May 2014!
Our venue for the conference from July 4-8 will be the Cape Town City Hall, where Nelson Mandela chose to address the world in his first hours after being released from 27 years behind bars.
While honoring the past, this conference is committed to strategizing and strengthening nonviolent resistance movements in the present, those working in the context of post-apartheid politics, state repression, corporate land grabs, and neo-colonial policies.
Theme groups, workshops, and networking sessions will be held on a wide range of topics including:
- Climate change
- Migration
- Land struggles
- Government transparency
- Street violence
- Human trafficking
- Arms trade
- Revival of civic and liberation struggles
This is will be the first major international and Pan-African nonviolence-focused conference to be held in Africa. It will be hosted by the South African anti-militarist Ceasefire Campaign.
WRL is organizing a US delegation to this conference of people who will bring a breadth of experiences and are interested in laying the groundwork for future collaboration between WRL and our global partners. WRL delegation members will bring back critical conversations that will impact our campaign and program work, providing resources for our wider membership. We also encourage WRL friends and allies to attend and report back to their own communities and groups.
