Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics and I did not speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak out for me.”

Pastor Martin Niemoller (1892-1984)

A leader of the church’s opposition to Hitler. He was interned in Nazi concentration camps from 1937 to 1945. In the 1950’s and 1960’s he was West Germany’s foremost pacifist and active against nuclear armament.
