As we continue to celebrate WRL’s 95th Anniversary year, we are very pleased to announce that longtime WRL activist, Vicki Rovere, will be accepting the Ralph DiGia award at WRL’s annual Holiday Party this December 14th. Join us for food, drink, and a celebration of Vicki!
Vicki Rovere joined WRL as a teenager. She is a consistent presence at demonstrations around New York City and has participated in protests on several continents. In September 1968, she was expelled from the Soviet Union for protesting the invasion of Czechoslovakia in Moscow. For many years she regularly attended War Resisters International triennial and other gatherings. She has sung and organized with the Peoples' Voice Cafe, is a longtime War Tax Resister, and a creator and seller of political buttons. Vicki published two practical guides to New York City and is the founder and proprietor of the Free Store on Ludlow Street in New York's Lower East Side.
The Ralph DiGia Award has been awarded only twice, to Joanne Sheehan in 2015 and to Ruth Benn in 2014, and is given in recognition of outstanding service to WRL. The "Ralphie" comes in the form of an engraved souvenir Mets baseball bat.
