WRL is looking for a Summer 2013 Freeman Intern to work in Historic Preservation and Research Assistance
Are you interested in radical history? Want to work with one of the oldest and most exciting anti-militarism organizations? We are currently taking applications for our Summer Freeman Internship Program. The Summer 2013 Freeman Intern will focus primarily on archiving, with additional work specific to our 90th anniversary celebration, including a major conference in early August.
WRL has a fascinating history, and many materials from that legacy have made their way into its national office. We’re looking for an energetic, passionate intern to help us preserve our history and make it accessible for people doing research and activism. An intern would work closely with WRL's Office Coordinator and with our Archives Committee, helping to digitize photographs and publications, index documents, move materials to the organization's permanent collection at Swarthmore College, and provide aid to researchers. Interns also assist with administrative and office tasks.
Interns work 20 hours a week. The Freeman Intern works in the War Resisters League National Office in New York City. Internships generally run for about 13 weeks. The start date is flexible, but we'd like the intern to start at the beginning of June. Interns are not required to be students.
This Freeman Internship is an opportunity for a young person to become involved with a national antiwar organization, and to develop archiving skills and leadership. Applicants with experience in organizing, research, and historic preservation are encouraged to apply. Excellent writing and communication skills are necessary. Web and design skills are a plus. There is a stipend provided.
The War Resisters League, founded in 1923, currently runs a major campaign to stop the use of teargas and similar chemical weapons. Our work also includes GI rights and resistance support, development and distribution of organizing materials on nonviolent direct action and counter military recruitment and direct action and movement building trainings. We have a great young staff focused on taking leadership from and supporting those most affected by war at home and abroad, helping foster an intersectional analysis of oppression and war, and developing relationships with and taking cues on solidarity from activists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our strong emphasis is on fostering a national movement for revolutionary change using nonviolent direct action and ally work.

The Harrop A. and Ruth S. Freeman Peace Internship Endowment was created in 1996 by a bequest from life-long peace activists Ruth and Harrop Freeman to provide stipends to interns in the War Resisters League’s national office. The Freemans were close personal associates of WRL co-founder A.J. Muste, and Harrop — a radical lawyer and World War II conscientious objector — was one of the founding board members of the Muste Institute.
