Want to hone or share your organizing skills? Want to work with one of the oldest and most exciting national anti-militarist organizations? We are currently taking applications for our Winter 2013 Bilezikian Internship Program, which runs for 13 weeks starting January 14 (dates are flexible). Application deadline: Friday, December 17.
Our intern will work 20 hours a week on a number of organizing projects and administrative tasks, including the following:
- *Researching corporations, government players, and financial institutions involved in the business of making and selling tear gas all over the world and working with the WRL Organizing Team and our partners to advance our new campaign for the global ban of tear gas.
- *Working with WRL organizing staff and members of WRL to create media and events, including a national conference, surrounding the 90th anniversary of WRL in the Summer of 2013.
- *Working with local WRL chapters and affiliate groups all over the country, helping to provide national office support for their organizing.
- *Assisting WRL national organizers with creating media about WRL organizing, including blog postings, emails, a print newsletter, and videos.
- Helping to monitor and update our various social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
- *Assisting the National Organizing Coordinator with the coordination and documentation of calls that come into the G.I. Rights Hotline, which supports active duty soldiers who have questions about their experience in the military.
- *Administrative and routine office tasks.
The intern will work primarily with our National Organizing Coordinator and Field Organizer. The Bilezikian internship is an opportunity for young people to become involved with a variety of tasks key to the work of a national antiwar organization and to develop and strengthen their leadership skills. Applicants with some experience in organizing, popular education/training, and campaign work are especially encouraged to apply. Web and design skills are a plus. There is a stipend provided ($2,600) and WRL will work with those who can receive college credit. WRL may be able to assist interns coming from outside of NYC with finding housing. There is an office cat.
The War Resisters League is actively committed to seeking the full representation and participation of all people, including people of color, people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming (LGBTSTGNC), and people with disabilities (though it should be noted that the office is not wheelchair accessible), as well as people of various ages and class and cultural backgrounds. Such diversity is sought throughout WRL's staff and decision-making bodies. The War Resisters League affirms that all war is a crime against humanity. We therefore are determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive nonviolently for the removal of the causes of war, including racism, sexism, and all forms of human exploitation.
Please send your one-page resume and one-page cover letter to WRL National Organizing Coordinator Kimber Heinz at kimber [at] warresisters.org.
